Cow Economy
This breed should be promoted in Odisha instead of Jersey breed. As neck ( hankuda ) of the jersey breed is plane, the male calves are of no use, they can’t be engaged in ploughing, cart pulling and other agricultural works.
Thus male calves are becoming burdens on cow farmers. They are selling jersey male calves to slaughter houses, which very often creates social disharmony.
As the world is going organic, more and more bullock power should be used in agriculture. You will be astonished to know that 75% of fuel is consumed just to pull the tractor, only 25% is spent for ploughing th field.
Engineers should produce Power Plough which will be pulled by the ox but the ploughing will be done by the machine.
It is possible. Odisha agriculture dept has designed such a device, but the dept is more interested in purchasing tractors and power tillers as the power plough will generate very low PC in comparison to tractor and power tillers.
Animal hausbandry dept should promote this breed instead of jersey breed if they really want to see the development of agriculture and farming community of Odisha.
Govt is purchasing and supplying jersey seimen for artificial insemination and the farmers have no choice and no knowledge of other high milched cow breeds. The govt should also try to procure and supply Siemens which will produce female calves only.
The Gir breed is very similar to Binjharpuri and Nuapada breeds and will be well adopted to Odisha climate and well acceptable to Odisha farmers.
Only the dept should change their mindset.
Our agriculture minister, animal hausbandry minister and the secretaries has a role in this regard. Such small decision like this will definitely double the farmers income within one year.
Will the minister yield ?
